Explaining to them about word of mouth advertising

I was telling my economics class about the earliest form of marketing. Long before there were newspapers and televisions and the Internet there was word of mouth advertising to sell things. Back in the olden days people would pass the word along to everyone they met and then they would tell others and so the marketing campaign would begin. It was really simple and the big part was is that it did not cost anything to do. I am sure the very first ad men were probably paying people in the crowds at the Colosseum to talk about their shops in the bazaar during the events.
