Leed behind bars

More and more buildings are achieving leed certification for their lower environmental impact. Retail shops, office buildings and other types of commercial buildings built to specifications to have greater energy efficiency, less landfill waste and less water waste are becoming more common but I think one are sorely lacking is the penal system. I often hear about new prisons being built or read about it in the newspaper that new prisons are needed due to overcrowding but there is only one out of over one hundred Federal prisons in America that is leed certified and it is located in Butler, North Carolina.
