Life in Cuba

Cuba, land of sugarcane, waves and …..Castro.  What a sad place that is.  A couple of recent related items caught my eye or ear to be exact. Some enterprising soul has set up a Craig’s List look-alike for Cuba and it’s become an instant hit with over 100,000 new listings in the last few weeks.  The site is called revolico.com and you’ll notice that the server domain is a .com not a .cu, so the server is somewhere off the island.  A look at some popular categories of items listed gives a rough topography of the misery.  Computers and all their assorted paraphernalia are the hot item.  Seems you can buy the same stuff through the government controlled outlets but the price is four times that of the black market rate on revolico.  People are smuggling these things into the country and then reselling them at a dandy profit.  The average Cuban makes 20$ per month, so any extra earnings, however illegal, are a blessing. Also big are used cars and parts, circa 1960 and earlier.  The Government won’t let anything newer than the 1960 models be resold.  Sorry, the good stuff is reserved for loyal lackeys and psychophants.  Then there’s the stateside gal who is offering to get you off the island.  All you have to do is marry her when she visits the island this summer and you’re done-course it’s half down and half upon delivery.  Fair is fair, after all.  Other news: There is an 8-lane freeway leading out of Havana, courtesy of the Soviets.  A small trickle of cars use this road because asoline is $4.50 per gallon, that’s approximately ¼ month’s pay for the average Joe, or Jose as the matter might be.  You do however have massive crowds standing around on the entrance ramps at all hours waving banknotes at passing cars in the hopes that one will stop and act as an informal taxi.  Pathetic.Jeremy Myers is the Owner of Lyssabeth’s www.montereyweddingofficiants.com
