Improve Your Memory with the Peg System

The Peg System is an easy memory improvement technique that is nevertheless very powerful.  To use this technique, you first need to memorize ten “pegs” on which you can mentally hang information.

One common way to set up your peg system is by rhyming the pegs with the numbers one through ten.  This is best explained by example.

For instance:  One-Gun; Two-Shoe; Three-Tree; Four-Door; Five-Hive; Six-Sticks; Seven-Heaven; Eight-Gate; Nine-Wine; Ten-Chin.

This technique is a fun way to improve your memory.  Here’s how it is used.  To memorize a list of ten items, associate each item in your list with one of the peg words.

Suppose you are trying to memorize a shopping list.  If the first item on the list is “lettuce”, imagine a hunter shooting a head of lettuce with his gun.  The second item might be “ketchup”.  Imagine your shoes filled with ketchup and how that might feel when you put them on.

To recall the list, simply think of the pegs.  When you think the words “One-Gun”, the image of the hunter shooting the lettuce should come immediately to mind.  Same with “Two-Shoe” and the word ketchup.

Try the peg technique the next time you need to memorize a list.  Your friends and family will be amazed by your powerful memory!
