An Engagement Ring has been used for generations traditionally as a symbol of commitment to a future marriage from a man to a woman. However proposals can and are executed in any way, shape and form, and not necessarily by the man. Some cultures believe that the woman should be the one to propose, while others are strictly against female proposals and they are shunned against by the community. Similarly some choose to purchase the ring before the proposal while others choose to purchase a ring as a couple at a later date. Whatever way the marriage is proposed, engagement rings are generally used and are expected to be a substantial investment.
